Whale Watching

From Kabalana, one of the world’s best locations (and perhaps THE best) for watching Blue Whales and Sperm Whales is a short drive south to the port of Mirissa. The waters off Mirissa on the southern coast of Sri Lanka are home to some of the largest whale and dolphin colonies in the world.

Out of the three whale watching and dolphin watching destinations in Sri Lanka – Mirissa, Kalpitiya, and Trincomalee – the port of Mirissa remains the most popular and offers direct access to the International Whaling Commission’s protected zone in the Indian Ocean. Of the 80 species of cetaceans observed and identified worldwide, 26 are found in the Indian Ocean.

Originally, whale watching in Sri Lanka was pursued by only serious researchers and whale enthusiasts – but the powerful spectacle of the world’s largest mammals has drawn more interest in recent years. Experienced tour companies, such as “Eco Team” have been working in association with international wildlife organizations since 2001 to make whale and dolphin watching a valuable addition to Sri Lanka’s tourism experience. Professional whale watching tours are operated according to guidelines published by the International Whaling Commission. https://iwc.int/wwguidelines

Tours operated by “Eco Team” include purpose-built boats fitted with all the necessary safety devices including a compass, GPS, nautical charts and UHF radio for whale watching. Fast, reliable, and safe, the boats have onboard washroom and rest facilities. The “Eco Team” boat is also able to cater to wheelchair bound guests.
